Our Mission and Objectives

The Thomas More Institute for the Renewal of Teaching and Learning in the Liberal Arts

Welcome to the Thomas More Institute.

This first appearance of the Thomas More website heralds an effort to make some contribution to learning in the Liberal Arts for our time and in our place, and our hope is that the website will enable us to reach a broad audience outside the precincts of a University or College.

Our full title is: The Thomas More Institute for the Renewal of Teaching and Learning in the Liberal Arts. Classically the seven liberal arts are three of language: grammar rhetoric and logic, and four of number: arithmetic, geometry, astronomy, and music. Considering these the arts of a free man, for this is the meaning of liberal, in our post-modern world liberal learning is better served by the modern arts of human nature, literature, philosophy, history, and theology.

Teaching and learning

Encourage teaching, especially the teaching of the great intellectual heritage of Christendom as a work of mercy and God given vocation, in consonance with the teaching of the Roman Catholic Church.

Our Library

Maintain a library and make it accessible to scholars. The library of the Institute is called the James L. and Mary D. MacFarlane Library of Theology and the Liberal Arts.

Education and Curriculum

Support scholars through grants and scholarships, and provide curricula and resources on the Liberal Arts in the Catholic Tradition.
